Located next to downtown Victoria, the Township of Esquimalt, with a population of over 17,000, is home to Canada’s Pacific Naval Fleet. The community boasts extensive amenities including beautiful parks and beaches, scenic waterfront walkways as well as modern recreational facilities, schools, and commercial services.

About our organization:

The Esquimalt Recreation Centre is a multi-purpose wellness and community recreation facility. Features of the Recreation Centre include: 4500+ square foot Wellness Centre, featuring state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment, gymnasium, aquatic centre with six-lane 25 metre lap pool, warm "lifestyle pool" and tot pool with spray features, wheelchair accessible hot-tub, steam room, and sauna. In addition, to recreation activities and programs, there are hundreds of year-round community programs to choose from. 

About the opportunity:

This is an auxiliary position requiring the incumbent to work with the Community Recreation area of Parks and Recreation. We are currently seeking substitute Preschool Instructors to cover staff during periods of vacation or illness for our Licensed Childcare Program.

DUTIES:

  • Plan, develop, and implement ½ day preschool curriculum designed to meet children’s social, physical, intellectual, creative, cultural, emotional, and developmental needs in a play-based environment.

  • Provide opportunity for creative expression through the mediums of art, dramatic play and music.

  • Build children’s social and interpersonal skills and self-esteem by establishing routines and positive guidance policies that allow children to feel secure, comfortable and safe.

  • Assess the developmental level of children.

  • Provide supervision and guidance of daily activities, field trips and special activities.

  • Prepare progress reports and discuss with parents and other staff members.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have at least one year of experience working with children 3-5 years old in a preschool environment. Preference will be given to candidates that have experience working in a licensed childcare setting and are familiar with childcare licensing requirements. 

  • Must be at least 19 years of age
  • ECE Certification – valid BC License to Practice as an Early Childhood Educator
  • Current Standard First Aid Certification
  • Clear Criminal Record Check via the Ministry of Justice
  • Experience working with children ages 3-5 years old

A clear and current criminal record check with vulnerable sector check is a condition of employment and is the financial responsibility of the candidate.

Salary: $20.84-22.52 hourly plus 14% in lieu of benefits (2024 rates) = $23.76-$25.67 +$6/hr ECE Wage enhancement for those with valid ECE Certificates.

Scheduled hours vary Mon/Wed/Fri between 8:30am-3:00pm with opportunity for additional hours during spring/summer camps.
