Anticipated Start Date: June 17, 2024
Full Day Camp Leaders (Up to 16 positions): 40 hours per week Mon-Fri (8:45am – 4:15pm)  
Part-Time Extended Care Leaders (Up to 10 positions): approx. 20hrs Mon-Fri (7:00am – 9:00am) & (3:30pm – 5:30pm)

Located next to downtown Victoria, the Township of Esquimalt, with a population of over 17,000, is home to Canada’s Pacific Naval Fleet. The community boasts extensive amenities including beautiful parks and beaches, scenic waterfront walkways as well as modern recreational facilities, schools, and commercial services.

About our organization:

The Esquimalt Recreation Centre is a multi-purpose wellness and community recreation facility. Features of the Recreation Centre include: 4500 + square foot Wellness Centre, featuring state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment, gymnasium, aquatic centre with six-lane 25 metre lap pool, warm “lifestyle pool” and tot pool with spray features, wheelchair accessible hot-tub, steam room, and sauna. In addition, to recreation activities and programs, there are hundreds of year-round community programs to choose from.

 

About the opportunity:

The Parks and Recreation department is seeking enthusiastic and reliable individuals to plan and lead a variety of Day Camps and Extended Care programs! We provide 9 weeks of camps (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) that run out of the Esquimalt Recreation Centre, Archie Browning Sport Centre and Bullen Field. This is a temporary, 11-week position requiring the incumbent to work from June 17, 2024, until August 30, 2024, with potential to stay on for Fall 2024 in the Out of School Care program. 

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the fun and safety of all participants through child supervision, first aid, site safety, risk management and behaviour management.
  • Creating lesson plans, supply lists, and leading up to 9 weeks of summer camps 
  • Leading a variety of games, arts/crafts, sports, and outdoor recreational activities for children ages 3-14 years-old. 
  • Communicate and work cooperatively with participants, parents, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Provide excellent customer service and public relations and enjoy working in a fast-paced outdoor environment. 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have: 

  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate & CPR-C
  • Experience working with children ages 3-14 in any of the following settings: day camps, sports, out of school care programs, recreational programs. 
  • Experience working with individuals with extra support needs (behavioural or cognitive) 
  • Previous training/education in child or youth care
  • Clean Criminal Record Check (to be completed when hired)
  • Class 4 driver’s license (not required for all positions)

Compensation & Perks:

  • Salary: $23.57= $20.68 hourly plus 14% in lieu of benefits (2024 rates)
  • Staff Recreation Pass with access to the weight room, drop-in fitness classes, drop-in sports, pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna. 
  • Paid summer camp training
