Overview
The Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness on the job, or due to a work-related incident. It serves to renew workers’ commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace by raising awareness to prevent further tragedies. April 28 was chosen as the date of observance because it was on that date in 1914 that the first comprehensive workers compensation legislation was enacted.
It is estimated that 1,000 workplace fatalities occur annually on Canadian job sites and many more are injured or become ill. It is important that we honour all those affected and that we continue to prioritize occupational health and safety in our workplaces.
