Esquimalt, B.C.—Next week is Small Business Week in B.C and the township is excited to recognize the vital role small businesses play in our community. Small businesses in B.C. employed around 1,135,300 people in 2022. This accounts for 51 per cent of private sector jobs in the province. Small businesses create a big impact in communities around the province and Esquimalt is no exception.
“While Esquimalt is known for larger employers like Seaspan and CFB Esquimalt, our smaller businesses add uniqueness and diversity to the township,” said Mayor Desjardins. “You can find foods, goods and services here you can’t find anywhere else.”
Think delicious, diverse restaurants conveniently located along main roads, or the light industrial zone on Devonshire Road that hosts metal fabrication shops, breweries and more. Events like the Esquimalt Farmers Market showcase local emerging entrepreneurs and their innovative products.
Esquimalt actively supports its small businesses. In its second year, the Business Façade Improvement Program offers grants for exterior upgrades to enhance the curb appeal of local businesses.
The creation of an Economic Development role for the township last year strengthens relationships with business associations and individual owners, keeping the township informed about industry trends and responsive to local needs. An example of this was aligning the business licencing bylaw with current industry standards to foster a positive, business-friendly climate.
The future looks bright for Esquimalt's business landscape. With over 1,000 housing units in the pipeline or under construction, demand for local goods and services is certain to increase.
Ready to join the thriving Esquimalt business community? Esquimalt issued over 800 business licences in 2023, and with a 5 per cent growth this year there is no better time to be part of our success story.
In support of Small Business Week, Small Business B.C. is offering a wealth of free resources available for small businesses starting October 23.
