ESQUIMALT, BC—Esquimalt Fire Rescue is implementing a single family residential Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Awareness campaign. The campaign starts in June and will last until late summer. The project is multi-year and will see the department target a specific area of the community each year.

Residents can expect a door visit from two friendly firefighters highlighting the importance of working smoke alarms and offering to test their smoke alarm for free.

“If the members find a smoke alarm that is not working we will try to determine the reason and fix the problem,” said Fire Chief Chris Jancowski. “If the problem can’t be fixed, we’ll offer to install a replacement battery operated smoke alarm for free. It’s very important to us that residents have these devices working to help ensure their safety.”

For those not at home at the time of the visit, members will leave a package on the door handle with information about the importance of working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms along with an offer to set up a visit from the fire department.

For 2019, the target door to door campaign is the residential community south of Esquimalt Road from Craddock and Beatty to Admirals Road. Residents can expect to see the fire department in their area on a week day evening or afternoon on weekends.

The community will also be seeing the fire department at community events throughout the summer promoting this important life safety information.

All residents are encouraged to check their smoke alarms regularly. For information about smoke alarm safety, go to Esquimalt.ca/fire.
