Work is progressing on two major road improvement projects in Esquimalt: the Admirals/Colville intersection and Craigflower Road. Both projects will improve safety and access for residents and commuters.
The Admirals/Colville intersection is expected to be completed by the end of January, including activation of new traffic lights. Currently there are no traffic delays at the intersection but drivers are advised to proceed with caution through the intersection and watch for construction workers. The project was originally expected to be completed by November 15th, but utility pole and line relocation has taken longer than anticipated.
The new intersection will create efficient movement of traffic for commuters and includes safety gates for trains, left turn lanes on Admirals Road and right turn lanes at all four corners of the intersection.
Phase 1 of the Craigflower Road Corridor Upgrading Project, from Dominion Road to Garthland Road on Craigflower, is 95% completed. Phase 2 of the project, comprising the Garthland Road to Admirals Road section of Craigflower, will begin in February. Final detailed designs are now being completed and the construction contract will be tendered on February 8th, 2010. The Craigflower Road project includes bicycle lanes in each direction, continuous sidewalks on both sides, and median islands for traffic calming.
Phase 2 of the Craigflower Road project will coincide with an upgrading of Old Island Highway in View Royal, so commuters can expect to experience some delays over the next few months. “Safety is our number one concern during these upgrading projects,” said Jeff Miller, Director of Engineering and Public Works for the Township of Esquimalt. “We appreciate the patience of commuters and ask that they keep an eye out for construction workers as well as Esquimalt public works crews.”
