Esquimalt, B.C—On December 12, 2024, the Esquimalt Recreation Centre marks a significant milestone: fifty years of promoting health, wellness, and community connection. Since opening its doors in 1974, the centre has grown into a vibrant hub where people of all ages come together to build relationships, achieve fitness goals, and create lasting memories.
Over the years, Esquimalt Recreation Centre has been a cornerstone for countless special events that have brought the community closer. From seasonal festivals and charity fundraisers to sports leagues and holiday celebrations, the centre has hosted a wide range of gatherings that celebrate diversity and create traditions that will be enjoyed for generations to come.
The centre also always been a hub of communication and connectedness. In its early days, bulletin boards and word of mouth kept the community informed. Today, through digital newsletters, social media, and a community app, Esquimalt Parks and Recreation continues to ensure that everyone stays up to date on upcoming programs, events, and health initiatives.
“As we look forward to the next fifty years, the future is bright”, said Mayor Barbara Desjardins. “With new programs on the horizon and a continued focus on holistic health and wellness, we are excited to continue our mission of growth and community connection.”
To celebrate this special anniversary, Esquimalt Parks and Recreation is bringing back Jazzercise—the fitness trend that defined the 1970s and played a pivotal role in shaping the fitness landscape of the 1980s. This fun, energizing dance-based workout fostered a sense of community and camaraderie among participants, and it continues to inspire people today.
The public is invited to join a special Jazzercise session on Thursday December 12 from 12:10 – 12:55 pm at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre.
“Whether you register in advance or drop in at reception, it’s sure to be a celebration of fitness, fun and nostalgia” said Parks and Recreation Director Steve Knoke. “We encourage the community to come visit the centre during the day for games and some surprise treats”.
Visitors can also visit the special display by the Esquimalt Archives that features historical images and artifacts from the early days of the centre. The display is at the Esquimalt Municipal Hall foyer (1229 Esquimalt Road) and a selection of images are online.
Here’s to 50 years of health, fitness, and community—and to the next 50 years of making memories together! For more details, visit www.esquimalt.ca/recreation.
