An annual reminder for safety
The flags at the Esquimalt Municipal Hall, Public Safety Building, and Archie Browning Sports Centre will be flown at half-mast in recognition of the Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace on Thursday, April 28, 2022.
The flags will be lowered by 8:30 a.m. on April 28, and raised on the morning of April 29.
Overview
The Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness on the job, or due to a work-related incident.
It serves to renew workers’ commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace by raising awareness to prevent further tragedies. April 28 was chosen as the date of observance because it was on that date in 1914 that the first comprehensive workers compensation legislation was enacted.
It is estimated that more than 1,000 Canadians are killed on the job each year, and even more are injured or become ill. Around the world, every 15 seconds 1 worker dies, 151 work-related injuries are reported, and 76 occupational diseases are reported. It is important that we honour those affected and that we continue to prioritize occupational health and safety in our workplaces.
