ESQUIMALT, BC—Heavy wind and rain from Friday night continued to add pressure to pipes and drain systems in region. The storm that hit the Township on January 31 caused a number of backups and overflows due to intensity and duration. Due to this, a number of pumps stations were overwhelmed and discharged directly to outfall areas, including West Bay and the Gorge Waterway. The Township has notified the Province and are working with staff to deal with this event. Township crews have been working around the clock on managing the surplus water volume.

The storm also produced high flows in storm and sanitary collection systems that may have caused backups into buildings connected to these systems. The collection systems are returning to normal flows but are still running at capacity Saturday morning. Crews have been dispatched to monitor and take appropriated steps as required. These actions include reviewing and maintaining containment actions on the recent hydrocarbon spill on Gorge Creek.

If your home has experienced flooding due to this event please call your home insurance provider for information about next steps and restoration. If you want to inform the township of a backup/flooding issue, this information can be sent to engineering@esquimalt.ca or calling 250-414-7108.

More information about public and private drain systems is at Esquimalt.ca.
