ESQUIMALT, BC—The Township of Esquimalt is accepting nominations for the office of councillor.

The council vacancy is a result of former Councillor Darlene Rotchford's resignation when she was elected to the provincial legislature in the October 2024 provincial election.

The elected councillor will serve until the next scheduled Local General Election on October 17, 2026.

A person is qualified to be nominated, elected, and to hold office as a member of local government if they meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day, April 5, 2025;
  • Canadian citizen;
  • Resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately preceding the day nomination papers are filed; and
  • Not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or being nominated for, being elected to or holding the office, or be otherwise disqualified by law.

The township is served by six councillors and one mayor. Like other local governments in B.C., the municipality is charged with providing services for residents like fire protection, infrastructure maintenance, waste management, and maintenance of parks and green spaces as outlined in B.C.’s Community Charter.

The 2025 By-Election General Voting Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2025 with two advance voting days (March 26 and April 2) and mail ballots adding additional voting opportunities.

Interested persons can obtain information on the requirements and procedures for making nominations including nomination documents from the Esquimalt Municipal Hall, 1229 Esquimalt Road, during regular office hours until the close of the nomination period at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2025. Packages may also be requested by email to elections@esquimalt.ca.
