October is Power Smart Month and BC Hydro, partnering with Global TV, is profiling the Township of Esquimalt as a Power Smart Community.
The Township recently completed an energy study of all its municipal buildings including the Esquimalt Recreation Centre and Archie Browning Sports Centre. The study found opportunities to upgrade lighting and mechanical equipment in various buildings to save the municipality money on its electrical and natural gas bills. Once all energy upgrades are completed, the Township will reduce its electrical consumption by 300,000 kWh per year and energy and maintenance costs by $160,000 per year.
A promotional spot highlighting the project is airing throughout October on Global TV Morning News. The spot features a short interview with Mayor Barbara Desjardins by Global’s Mark Madryga.

Additional Power Smart improvements at the Township include an upgrade of the ice making plant at the Archie Browning Sports Centre that re-captures heat to warm the building and supply hot water to washrooms. Work on a similar heat recovery project is set to begin later this year at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre. The project will include the installation of a solar and heat recovery system to heat the centre’s three pools and facility hot water tanks.
By profiling communities around the province BC Hydro is encouraging individuals to visit the Power Smart website to get great energy saving tips and offers from retail partners on energy efficient appliances and products.
