Snow removal in the township

Clearing sidewalks by private property

In the event of snowfall, property owners and residents are advised that the Township of Esquimalt’s Streets and Traffic Regulation Bylaw requires you to clear snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of your premises. Please remember your neighbours who would appreciate your assistance with snow removal.

When you clean your driveway and sidewalks please place the snow on the right side of your driveway as you face the road. This will keep snow plows from filling in your driveway as they clear the roads.

In addition, residents are asked to ensure that surface drains (which may be located at the bottom of driveways and stairwells) are clear of snow and debris and remain clear through the winter. Township crews will make every effort to keep roadside catch basins clear.

The co-operation of all property owners and residents in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Snow removal by the township

Our staff are prepared to brine, salt and plow roads as needed during the change in weather. Please be cautious when walking/ driving/biking as the conditions change.

The order in which roads are salted, sanded or cleared of snow shall generally be:
(a) main streets
(b) main hilly streets
(c) bus routes
(d) secondary roads
(e) hilly residential streets
(f) balance of residential streets

Public Works  determines the actual routes and order of salting/sanding/snow clearing in consultation with the Police Department, and may be altered to best suit the road/weather conditions.
