The Township of Esquimalt and the Urban Wildlife Stewardship Society (UWSS) are conducting a population estimate survey of deer in Esquimalt. Surveys will be taking place twice daily, at dawn and dusk, on the following dates:
- October 23-27, 2017
- October 30- November 3, 2017
- November 6-10, 2017
In order to identify as many unique deer individuals as possible, UWSS is creating a photo identification catalogue of deer in the community. Residents can contribute photographs to this catalogue. Each photo submission will enter the photographer’s name into a draw for a prize.
Residents are reminded to exercise caution near deer. November through December is the rutting sason for bucks and they can be unpredictable, especially when a dog is nearby.
Photo criteria:
- Clear image
- Face and antlers facing forward
- Ears flared outwards
- Full body
- Multiple angles
- Location, time and date observed
