In recognition of Louis Riel Day on November 16, 2015, the Township of Esquimalt will be raising the Métis flag in place of the Municipal flag at Municipal Hall. The Metis flag will be in place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Louis Riel Day, held on the third Monday of February, is an opportunity to learn about Métis culture, language and heritage. It is observed as a statutory holiday in Manitoba.

Louis David Riel is the spiritual and political leader of the Métis, who represent 32% of the total Aboriginal population in Canada, and is considered to be the father of Manitoba.
