Updated September 30th, 2013 - Esquimalt Parks and Recreation advises that Memorial Park is currently undergoing a major upgrade. Majority of work has been completed: the pathways and playground are open to the public, the lawn areas will remain fenced to allow the seed to germinate.

“The project will improve the appearance of the park while respecting its memorial status,” said Manager of Parks and Facilities Rick Daykin. “It will also enhance the park’s greenspace and protect the root systems of existing park trees.”

The upgrades to Memorial Park will include:

  • A new central walkway up to the cenotaph with brick pavers to match the shoulder entryways constructed as part of the 2012 Centennial Walkway Project;
  • A symbolic poppy paver design on the main walkway in front of the cenotaph;
  • A new heritage-themed entranceway, including pillars reconstructed to match the shoulder entries;
  • Site re-grading and a new underground drainage system to manage surface water; and,
  • Landscaping and lighting.

The playground to the north of the cenotaph will remain open during construction, except for a short period when the new drainage system is installed; the playground will be closed August 21st-23rd and 26th-30th. The centennial walkway on the eastern shoulder of the park will also remain open to allow pedestrian access between Esquimalt Road and Park Terrace.

The park, established in 1924 to commemorate soldiers killed in World War I, was designated a heritage site in 1995.

Memorial Park will be open for the November 11th, 2013 observance of Remembrance Day.
