In response to the growing concern over the spread of seasonal viruses, Esquimalt Fire Rescue is stepping up its efforts to reduce the potential for transmission of the flu virus. The department has initiated a protection program to reduce the potential for transmission of the flu to both members of the public and emergency responders.
Fire Rescue team members who have chosen not to be vaccinated against the flu will wear surgical masks when attending to ill persons, or when entering a patient care facility as emergency medical aid responders. Team members who have been vaccinated against the flu will wear a distinctive rubber wrist band.
Should you see fire personnel wearing surgical masks, please remember this is part of Esquimalt Fire Rescue’s continuing efforts to promote and help ensure a healthy community for both patients and fire department responders during the flu season.
