On May 2nd, 2011, Esquimalt Council gave direction to staff to remove the granite boulders from the Denniston Park pathway and restore it to its original condition. The gate to the encasement is to remain locked with additional signage posted. In addition, the semi-permanent fencing around the slope erosion area is to be completed.
Rock removal will commence on the afternoon of May 4th, 2011 with completion scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 6th, 2011. While this work is being carried out it will be necessary to close the park. We regret the inconvenience that this temporary closure will cause and thank residents for their patience. Please obey all construction signage.
From May 9th to May 18th, 2011, restoration work will be carried out in the park. This work will include construction of the semi-permanent fencing around the erosion area, asphalt placement, step construction and turf restoration. The park may have some temporary localized closures to ensure that the work site is safe for both the public and workers.
By May 27th, 2011, permanent signage on the gate will be installed. This signage will identify the hazards associated with accessing the concrete encasement and will indicate that no public access is permitted. Completion of this restoration work will be weather dependent.
Moving Forward
The Township will hold an open house in mid to late June, 2011. The purpose of the open house is to obtain comments from Esquimalt residents on possible solutions to the safety concerns identified at Denniston Park. Once public input has been received and reviewed, the Township will hold another open house to explore options. An agreed upon preferred option will be forwarded to Council for discussion in late September/early October.
Meeting notifications will be delivered to residents in the immediate area around Denniston Park. An open invitation will also be made to the wider public via the Township’s website.
