Esquimalt’s new Council were sworn into office this evening in the presence of community members at the Esquimalt Municipal Hall. The Inaugural Meeting marked the beginning of Council’s three-year term until December 2011.
The new Council will be led by former Councillor and new Mayor Barb Desjardins. The Council will also consist of returning Councillors Don Linge and Lynda Hundleby, and past Councillor Bruce McIldoon; who are joined by new Councillors Alison Gaul, Meagan Brame and Randall Garrison.
Mayor Desjardins delivered her Inaugural Speech where she stressed the mandate of council will be of change for Esquimalt during this challenging economic period. Mayor Desjardins highlighted the key priorities of Council which include: increasing the municipality’s communication with the public; police presence and response in Esquimalt; continuing work on the Esquimalt Village Project; legalization of secondary suites; and review of the Official Community Plan regarding high-density designation.
One of the first changes residents can expect is in Esquimalt’s committee structure. Mayor Desjardins will not finalize some of Councils’ committee appointments until after council sets its goals and objectives in January. During the meeting past council members were recognized for their service to the municipality, including the late Basil Boulton who passed away earlier this year.
The first Regular Meeting of Council will be held on Monday, December 15th at 7 p.m. Agendas and minutes of Council and Committee of the Whole meetings are available on the Township’s newly designed municipal website.
