An age-friendly community is a place where older adults are supported to live active, socially engaged and independent lives. This spring the Township will be undertaking an age-friendly assessment which will include a community workshop to be held at the Archie Browning Sports Centre on Thursday, April 28th.
What: Age-Friendly Community Workshop
Where: Archie Browning Sports Centre, 1151 Esquimalt Road
When: Thursday April 28th, 2016, 1 – 3 p.m.
The workshop is designed to be fun and engaging and will explore the current state of affairs, ask participants to imagine an ideal future, and focus on the actions required to achieve that future. Older adults (55+), caregivers, service providers, and anyone with an interest in an age-friendly future is encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served.
A community survey will be launched at the workshop that will offer residents an opportunity to express their opinions on the extent to which Esquimalt is or is not age-friendly according to the eight World Health Organization themes for an age-friendly community. These themes include: accessible transportation and mobility, community support and health services, outdoor spaces and buildings, respect and social inclusion, social participation, civic participation, employment, and information.
An online version of the survey will also be available from April 28th to May 20th here.
Several community partners have joined with the Township on this initiative including the Greater Victoria Housing Society, Greater Victoria Public Library (Esquimalt Branch), Esquimalt Neighbourhood House, Esquimalt Lions, Renaissance Retirement Residence, Royal Canadian Legion (Esquimalt Dockyard Branch #172 Seniors Group), and the West Bay Residents Association.
The age-friendly assessment is funded by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Seniors' Housing & Support Initiative.
