ESQUIMALT, BC—Cleanup efforts continue along Gorge Creek. Esquimalt staff are continuing to investigate potential spill sites in the north neighbourhoods of Esquimalt as well as monitor the creek to deploy booms and absorbing materials as conditions change.
The conditions of the creek and nearby waterway are highly variable due to both the higher than usual tides and the additional rain. In order to accommodate these challenging conditions, the Township is in the process of retaining external assistance to help manage the spill response.
Township staff remains in contact with the Ministry of Environment to ensure that they are aware of the situation as it develops and changes.
As this is an evolving matter, the public’s patience as crews work to identify and mitigate the source is appreciated.
There are several watershed outflows in Esquimalt that empty into shorelines around the Township. Residents and businesses are reminded to avoid allowing chemicals and other materials into catch basins and drains.
Residents are asked to respect the fencing around the creek to avoid further disruption. Anyone spotting a spill, or notice the risk of one occurring, are asked to report it immediately by calling 1-800-663-3456.
