We are coming on a meaningful time of year for Canadians from coast to coast to coast as we prepare to remember, with respect, Aboriginal Veterans Day on November 8, and Remembrance Day on November 11.
“It is important to observe our Veterans’ Days and remember those who have given themselves in service for us”, said Mayor Barbara Desjardins. “Esquimalt will remember them, just a bit differently this year. For the best interest of our Veterans and their families, please be mindful of their safety and yours as you reflect on their sacrifices.”
Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid attending local ceremonies in person and to avoid close proximity with others.
This event, as respected as it is, still needs to follow provincial health orders. Learn more from the BCCDC.
There are several ways to acknowledge our veterans:
- Watch as the Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day ceremony in Esquimalt is televised on CHEK TV.
- Watch as the Remembrance Day ceremony is televised from Ottawa
- Livestream from the War Museum
- Check for local posts from CFB Esquimalt on Facebook: facebook.com/EsquimaltBase
- Veterans Affairs Canada has shared many ways to remember on their website
- Camosun College has kindly put together some sources to learn more about our military history and honouring our veterans.
- The Esquimalt MFRC and the Lookout Newspaper Navy News have partnered to provide a colouring sheet in the November 2nd issue of the Lookout Newspaper (and online via the MFRC website). There might not be in-person ceremonies this year but here is one way for kids to show our Veterans that we remember. Post it in your window or give it to the Veteran in your life. Download now.
