Hazardous waste means gaseous, liquid and solid waste which, because of its inherent nature and quantity, requires special disposal techniques to avoid creating health hazards, nuisances or environmental pollution.
Hazardous wastes include:
- toxins
- poisons
- corrosives
- irritants
- strong sensitizers
- flammables (excluding plastics, paper, and paper products)
- explosives
- infectious wastes
- condemned foods
- asbestos
- sharps (hypodermic needles, etc.)
- animal excrement
- soiled diapers
- used personal hygiene products
Bylaw 2815 – Collection and Removal of Solid Waste
Household hazardous wastes from residents of the Capital Regional District can be disposed of at the Hartland Landfill. This does not include industrial waste from commercial businesses.
