There are many buildings and sites in Esquimalt that represent a specific period in the Township’s settlement history.
The Township encourages the recognition and adaptive re-use of heritage structures, provided that the essential character of the building or site can be maintained. [Esquimalt Official Community Plan, 2007]
Heritage Designation
Heritage Designation is the legal protection of a property or site through the passing of a bylaw by the local government. Designation provides long term protection for a site, building, or the significant features of a site or building.
There are thirteen buildings that have been given heritage designation protection in Esquimalt. In addition, Memorial Park is also protected with this designation. View the designated locations here.
Any alterations to designated sites and buildings may require a Heritage Alteration Permit.
Heritage features— including buildings, trees, First Nations cultural features, natural areas, roads and viewpoints—are important community amenities that give the community a “sense of place."
