After working collaboratively with our user groups and community partners, Esquimalt Recreation staff have created a spring schedule that responds to concerns raised by the Eves of Destruction Roller Derby group. This change upholds access to a variety of community users at the Archie Browning Sport Centre.
The initial iteration of the spring schedule saw a shift in the roller derby youth training slot to a later time which concerned organizers. Esquimalt staff have since been able to offer an earlier time slot. This was possible by working collaboratively with CFB Esquimalt staff and the Greater Victoria Minor Ball Hockey League. The League will practice at the base for the spring season, freeing up Esquimalt’s arena time for other users.
“I commend all involved—including our staff—who worked hard to find a solution that addressed the concerns raised by Eves of Destruction. We have a finite amount of recreation facilities and a lot of growing interest from user groups,” said Mayor Barbara Desjardins. “It’s always a challenge to balance community requests with the overall efficient use of our resources. I imagine will we see the need for flexibility in the future as demands on our facilities continues to grow.”
The Archie Browning Sport Centre currently provides a wide range of access for various users. programs and events throughout the year. This includes approximately 6,000 hrs of rental and program space annually for both ice and dry floor surfaces. Balancing seasonal activities and community access can be challenging at times. We value all users and thank them for their understanding and patience during this transition.
