Esquimalt, B.C.—The Township of Esquimalt has launched a revitalization of its Street Banner Program—a project that enhances the municipality's aesthetic appeal and fosters community engagement.

For several years, the Township of Esquimalt has displayed banners in the community on street light posts throughout key areas and corridors. These banners include seasonal, memorial, and community event themes. Some of the banners used general images rather than ones specific to the township.

The new series of banners feature images of Esquimalt’s scenic views, like Saxe Point, Gorge Park and other popular locations.

"We are thrilled to be showcasing our local gems through this project,” said Mayor Barbara Desjardins. “We want residents, businesses and visitors to know that Esquimalt is the place to be”.

Highlights of the program include:

  • Installation of 30 welcome banners and 84 fall/winter banners at key entry points and other locations around the township;
  • Banner designs feature local photography;
  • A "Banner to Bag" recycling initiative for worn banners is planned for spring 2025, demonstrating the township's commitment to sustainability; and
  • A call-for-artist program to seek further designs (part of the Public Arts Plan) in 2025.

The aim of the initiative is to create a cohesive series of banners that are uniquely Esquimalt, so that visitors feel welcome and residents see their community reflected in art. The project is a council priority and has an allocated budget.

Dates for upcoming initiatives are still in the planning stages. Details will come in the early 2025.

The new banners can be viewed along Esquimalt Road.
