NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ESQUIMALT, BC—Over the past two weeks, Esquimalt Fire Rescue (EFRS) firefighters have demonstrated their steadfast commitment to community care by reuniting local residents with their pets during two separate emergency responses.
Structure fire response – February 4
During a structure fire at Nelson Lodge Apartments, 1337 Saunders Street, our team acted quickly to confine the flames to the unit of origin. Although smoke and water damage affected other parts of the building, no injuries were reported as the premises were unoccupied. Amid the incident, firefighters rescued a dog suffering from smoke inhalation. Utilizing specialized K-9 artificial respiration and prompt CPR, the team ensured the pet received immediate care before being transported to a veterinarian. We are pleased to report that Cody has since returned home with his owner and is doing well. Crews revisited the scene the following day, encouraged by the positive outcome.
Nighttime rescue – February 21
Late on February 21, EFRS responded to a call regarding a dog rescue. Cassie, a 6-year-old pup, had fallen off a walkway into the cold waters of the Gorge and became trapped. Firefighters used a ladder to lower a team member who safely secured Cassie and carried her up the steep bank. Thermal blankets were provided to address signs of hypothermia, and Cassie was successfully reunited with her owner. Although she was visibly shaken and chilled, Cassie is unharmed.
Chief’s statement
Chief Furlot of EFRS said, “Every call gives us the opportunity to serve our community with both skill and heart. Reuniting pets with their families reflects our commitment to protecting all members of our community. Our team's swift and professional response underscores the values that drive our service every day.”
